What does it mean to awaken your Kundalini?
Kundalini is an energy that is present at the base of your spine… all coiled up. The Kundalini energy is known to awaken and rise up through your spine up the sushumna nadi. As it rises up you experience different symptoms. The end goal being in tune, content, blissful, connected, bigger than you are. These are just a bunch of adjectives though. To quote the Japji, Pauri 12, “The state cannot be described, one who tries shall regret the attempt, neither pen or paper can narrate.”
As the energy rides up the spine there are certain energy center locations known as the chakras. There are 7 chakras located in the physical body and are known to control the major glands of the endocrine system. The chakras download, assimilate, and disperse energy throughout the body. They constantly receive status information from our subtle bodies. They are able to process and alter the energy vibration as necessary for the body. Interestingly in Chinese medicine, there are meridian points located in the body that are linked to the chakras. They help distribute the energy throughout all the organs much like energy rivers. You’ll notice in KY, there is a lot of breath work. You’ll find yourself holding your breath in or out for extended periods of time. It is during this time that these meridian rivers and channels extend and reach out looking for energy.. Stretching to extend more, experience MORE. As you can guess you want to keep your kundalini healthy and free flowing in order to help attain the best version of yourself.
Kundalini energy rises and when awakened it can adequately:
1. Generate
2. Capture
3. Direct
energy from within allowing us to manifest a better version of ourselves and the world. When your chakras are functioning well, are clean and open, they churn energy, generate more and allow the energy to be directed upwards. If you think you feel great after an enema, this is no comparison.
There are often reports of spontaneous healing that have been experienced. You can read about the vagus nerve stimulation in the article, “What is Kundalini Yoga”.
Not everyone who awakens their Kundalini, does Kundalini yoga. However, Kundalini Yoga helps to speed up this process. Thanks to Russell Brand, famous English actor, comedian, radio host, Kundalini Yoga is often compared to the crack/cocaine of yoga. Russell Brand has a famous quote, “Kundalini Yoga is the crack cocaine of yoga. If Hatha is a mild weed high, iyengar is a deep hash glow, and ashtanga is amphetamine, Kundalini blows the f*cking doors off.”
It is so very common to feel buzzed for extended periods of time as a direct consequence of Kundalini or meditative practices done. There are many very cool and not so fun experiences that people have during their Kundalini journey. Here is a list of Kundalini Awakening symptoms that are pretty common. The awakening process is driven by our own inner self, and works for our best interest. This shakti or power is something that is present in all of us. We want to be happy and healthy; that is our homeostatic state. When we pollute our body and mind with bad food, negative thoughts, or surround ourselves with energy vampires, we inch further and further away from where we need and truly want to be. Allowing our Kundalini energy to express itself to a fuller potential is our birthright. We deserve to be happy and loved always. As Yogi Bhajan says, “Bliss is our birthright!”
Sadguru, known for starting the Isha foundation for yoga/inner engineering, mentions research around the cannabis receptors that are present in our brains. He references the molecule discovered by an Israeli Scientist in 1992 called Anandamide (Ananda meaning bliss in Sanskrit). Basically, the conundrum faced by the scientist was around : “Why does our brain have a bunch of THC receptors in it? Especially since not everyone in the world has/had access to grow cannabis. Well, the discovery of Anandamide, helped answer this. Apparently we have the power to create Anandamide. It is produced in states of meditation, yoga, and prayer in our brain.
I know letting your Kundalini energy flow and awaken is important. You can’t really put a measurement on feelings or this particular energy.. (Although some machines claim to measure the energy of your chakras… and aura’s can be likened to our surrounding electromagnetic field around us, but that’s another discussion.)
So basically, awakening your Kundalini, is experiencing your flow as it needs to be.
In my personal experiences with Kundalini Yoga, I have felt head pressure, extended states of bliss, waking up at weird times, wanting to just sit and meditate for hours, and more..
I do feel that changing my lifestyle for the better, ie. nutrition, exercise was a huge stepping stone for me to feel any kind of blissful states. I do feel the food you put in your body helps you on this journey. A friend of mine talks about prana, life force, given off by our food. When we are putting high vibrational foods like fruits and vegetables that are fresh, close to nature into our body, our body adjusts vibrationally to respond.
If you are getting to a point where you feel you are awakening, it’s important to take care of yourself. Surround yourself with positive people who will support you. You are not alone. So many people have these experiences, it is not at all uncommon. Though not uncommon, it is still special. We are all special and have our own experiences. We would love to hear your experiences.
